Bridge by ChemicalAlia Bridge by ChemicalAlia
I finished this up tonight. I refined some parts a little more, but I didn't want to lose the loose brush strokes so I didn't go overboard with details on it.

It was suggested that I do some scenery stuff, so I started painting this landscape scene from HL2 Ep2.

I absolutely love how loose your brush strokes are. Do you use a bunch of different brushes? I only use two because I am afraid to change :) Also for some reason this looks like it would develop into an interesting tilt-shift image...if that is even possible in illustration. Good work!

Thanks! I like to work really quickly in the beginning to stay focused, so my sketches and paintings are usually pretty loose. I'd rather have a good foundation there that implies stuff with selective details to bring out the important parts than photorealistic details all over. I don't use a lot of brushes either, usually just a hard round brush with pressure sensitivy/opacity. Occasionally a calligraphic brush or a soft airbrush for some particular things. I tend to use grunge brushes and stuff like that more in my 3d texturing, though.

Very cool stuff, Alia. The perspective is pretty crazy, has a good flow to it, and the colors are appealing. And I can immediately recognize exactly where this is in Ep 2.

Hooray, thank you. I also wanted to paint the area with the bridge that has the car on top of it, facing out towards the the Victory Mine and all those buildings behind it where Alyx snipes the zombies from. Really cool environments.

Is that the one with the huge Alyx tits? I don't think I got to try that one out yet, but I've seen screenshots. There's some nice texture improvements as well as some dubious ones that I don't think work as well, but I'll have to check it out sometime.

Got any good tips/tutorials/guides/muses for scenery? Its something that I've been dying to do, but always get stumped on depth and layout :(

I like to start out with solid shapes to block in the major forms on a canvas with a medium value shade. I try to get basic colors down as soon as possible, and with landscapes I usually start in the background and work towards the foreground, adding details last. That helps me pay attention to the distance and atmospheric perspective. Hope that helps!
